Charlotte, NC
Montgomery Counseling Group
Every person’s map of the world is as unique as their thumbprint. There are no two people alike. No two people understand the same sentence the same way… So in dealing with people, you try not to fit them to your concept of what they should be.”
— Milton H. Erickson, MD
This philosophy forms the foundation of our approach at Montgomery Counseling Group, a psychotherapy practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. We are a team of experienced clinicians united by our commitment to honoring each client’s unique journey.
John Burns, MSW, LCSW, founded our practice after first studying Milton Erickson’s work in graduate school. He has brought together therapists in Charlotte, NC who share this deep respect for the individual nature of each person’s experience and healing process.
What We Offer:
Below you’ll find every service offered at Montgomery Counseling Group. Each one is delivered by a licensed clinician, grounded in evidence-based practice, and shaped by our trauma-informed framework.

Anxiety Therapy
Anxiety can look like overplanning, restlessness, or a body always braced for impact. Our Charlotte clinicians work with generalized worry, social anxiety, health anxiety, and more using trauma-informed talk therapy, EMDR, and mindfulness-based strategies tailored to you.

Telehealth Service
Life doesn't always allow for an office visit. MCG's Charlotte telehealth therapy delivers secure, HIPAA-compliant sessions via live video offering the same quality of care from wherever you're most comfortable. Research confirms telehealth outcomes are comparable to in-person therapy.

Trauma Therapy
Trauma often shows up as hypervigilance, shame, or repeating relationship patterns. MCG's Charlotte trauma therapy uses a trauma-informed framework with modalities like EMDR, IFS, and DBT, personalized to what fits each person best.

Depression Therapy
Depression is more than sadness, it's flatness, disconnection, and going through the motions. Depression therapy in Charlotte at MCG helps you understand what's underneath it and build genuine capacity for regulation, connection, and moving forward.

EMDR Therapy
EMDR helps the brain reprocess stored traumatic memories, shifting them from "happening now" to "something that happened then." Our EMDR therapy in Charlotte is led by an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, with specialized expertise in complex and developmental trauma.

Couples & Family Therapy
Disconnection builds quietly in repeated moments of conflict or unmet needs. Our couples and family therapy in Charlotte uses Emotionally Focused and Structural approaches to uncover underlying dynamics and help partners and families genuinely reach each other.

Therapy for Children and Adolescent
Behavioral shifts in children are always communicating something. MCG's Charlotte therapy for children and adolescents addresses anxiety, ADHD, autism, school avoidance, and more keeping caregivers closely involved throughout the process.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT builds practical skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) at MCG is led by a Certified Dialectical Behavior Therapist working with adults, adolescents, and families, including co-occurring substance use concerns.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps identify connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to shift patterns keeping you stuck. At MCG, Charlotte Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is applied flexibly within a broader trauma informed approach never as a rigid, one-size-fits-all protocol.

Clinical Hypnosis
Clinical hypnosis is a focused, evidence-based method for accessing subconscious patterns that drive behavior. Charlotte clinical hypnosis at MCG uses Ericksonian techniques, often alongside EMDR and IFS, for clients navigating complex and developmental trauma.

Group Therapy
Being witnessed by others who truly understand is something individual therapy can't always replicate. MCG's Charlotte group therapy offers psychoeducation and relational practice across a range of concerns, a meaningful complement to individual work.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I find a good therapist in Charlotte, NC?
The strongest fit comes from matching a therapist’s training to what you’re working through. Montgomery Counseling Group (MCG) is a trauma-informed practice in Charlotte, and the clinical team’s approaches include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), play therapy, and Clinical Hypnosis. When you contact MCG, we will match you with a clinician whose training and availability fit what you want to work on
What should I look for when choosing a therapist in Charlotte?
Three things: North Carolina licensure, training specific to the concern you want to address, and a working relationship that feels safe. MCG’s clinical team holds North Carolina licensure across LCSW, LCMHC, LCMHCA, and LCSWA credentials, and every clinician shares a trauma-informed framework so the work stays focused.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
It helps to have filled out the initial paperwork we will send you before the session so the clinician can focus on getting to know you and beginning to shape a plan together.
What are your rates, and do you accept insurance?v
MCG’s standard session fee is $150 per 60-minute session. MCG is in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Magellan, Medicare, and United Healthcare, and can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement with other carriers. Sliding scale options are available. To verify your insurance coverage before you come in, call the customer service number on your insurance card and confirm that we are in-network with your plan, or give us a call at 980-949-8990 and we can contact them for you.
Do you offer virtual or telehealth sessions?
Yes. MCG offers in-person sessions in Charlotte, NC and telehealth services to clients throughout North Carolina.
What kinds of therapy do you offer?
MCG uses evidence-based approaches like EMDR, IFS, Clinical Hypnosis, DBT, EFFT and Structural Family Therapy for couples and families, play therapy for children, and trauma-focused psychotherapy across the team. Group therapy is also offered. All clinicians work from a shared trauma-informed framework.
Who does MCG work with, and how will I be matched?
MCG’s clinical team works with adults, couples, families, children, and adolescents. Matching is deliberate: we pair you or your family member with a clinician based on the concern you’re bringing in, the modality that fits it, and current availability. If more than one clinician fits, scheduling and your in-person versus telehealth preference settle it.
How soon can I get an appointment?
You can check current availability and request an appointment directly through the client portal. Specific openings vary by clinician and by whether you’re looking for in-person or telehealth sessions.
Where is your office?
MCG is at 4108 Park Road, Suite 410, Charlotte, NC 28209, in the Park Road area, with telehealth available throughout North Carolina
How long are sessions, and how often do people come in?
Sessions average one hour. Many clients begin weekly and adjust cadence with their clinician as the work progresses. How long therapy lasts varies by the work: the aim is to work effectively and then step back, with the option to return in the future as needed. MCG does not default to keeping clients in therapy longer than the work calls for.
