Who We Are

The psychiatrist Milton H. Erickson held that no two people experience the world the same way, and that a clinician’s work is never to fit someone into a fixed idea of who they should be. That conviction sits at the center of how Montgomery Counseling Group was built.

John Burns, MSW, LCSW, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, first studied Erickson’s work in graduate school and has carried that approach through more than 30 years of clinical practice, including work in hospital settings, substance use programs, family therapy clinics, and Employee Assistance Programs. He opened Montgomery Counseling Group (MCG) in Charlotte, NC to build a practice centered on trauma-informed care, anxiety, and depression, where no fixed protocol stands in for the person in the room. The EMDRIA Approved Consultant designation John holds is an advanced EMDR credential that qualifies a clinician to provide formal consultation to other EMDR therapists.

The mission is straightforward: individualized care, delivered in a peaceful, unhurried atmosphere. MCG is a collaborative practice where clinical expertise meets compassionate, person-specific care for individuals, couples, and families throughout the Charlotte area. Approaches across the team include CBT, EMDR, DBT, clinical hypnosis, and Play Therapy, matched to what a specific person needs.

Trauma-informed describes how the whole team works. A parent bringing in a child for school avoidance and an adult processing years of complex trauma are seen by clinicians who coordinate around the same clinical framework, whether the concern is anxiety, a relationship in distress, a child’s shifting behavior, or a trauma history someone is ready to work through.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a therapist cost in NC?

Cost depends on a few factors: whether insurance is used, which plan is in place, and whether someone pays out of pocket. Using insurance can lower the amount paid per session, though it may also come with limits on session count or clinician choice, and coverage depends on the documentation requirements set by the plan. Paying out of pocket removes those limits and keeps the process more private. Montgomery Counseling Group offers a sliding scale for clients who pay out of pocket, based on income. Full details are on the Rates & Insurance page.

Finding a therapist in Charlotte usually comes down to a few things: specialty match, licensure, and whether the clinician’s approach fits how someone wants to work. Charlotte has a wide range of providers, which can make comparing them time-consuming. The Montgomery Counseling Group team spans trauma, anxiety, depression, couples and family work, and care for children and adolescents, all under one shared clinical framework. The services page outlines the full range of counseling and psychotherapy offered at MCG.

There is no single, universally agreed list of exactly seven types of counseling. Counseling is generally grouped by the population served and the concern being addressed, and different professional sources organize those groupings differently. Common categories include individual counseling, couples and family counseling, child and adolescent counseling, group counseling, trauma-focused counseling, grief counseling, and career counseling. At Montgomery Counseling Group, the relevant categories are individual, couples and family, and child and adolescent therapy, each delivered through a trauma-informed lens.

There is no fixed length. How long therapy takes depends on what someone is working on, and the number of sessions varies from person to person and concern to concern. At Montgomery Counseling Group, the client and therapist work together to move through the work as efficiently as the situation allows. The aim is to work effectively and then step back, with the door open for future sessions whenever they would help. MCG does not default to keeping clients in therapy longer than the work calls for

Every clinician at Montgomery Counseling Group works with anxiety as part of a broader trauma-informed approach, rather than it being the sole focus of any single provider. Each therapist’s profile lists their credentials and areas of focus, which is the fastest way to compare fit before reaching out.
