Meredith Turner-Toth, LCSW | Senior Clinician |

Montgomery Counseling Group

Trauma-Informed Therapist in Charlotte, NC

Collaborative counseling for adolescents and adults, in person at the Park Road office and by telehealth across North Carolina.

Meredith Turner-Toth is a Senior Clinician and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) at Montgomery Counseling Group in Charlotte, NC. She works with adolescents and adults who are dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions, relationship stress, trauma, and the strain of caring for someone else who is struggling.

Meredith approaches therapy with warmth and without judgment. Her work is collaborative. She helps people build self-awareness and draw on their own strengths, so that what they gain in session holds up long after the session is over.

How Meredith Works

Meredith draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed approaches in her practice. She adapts to what each person needs: some clients benefit from structure and skills work, others need more open processing. The method follows the person.

CBT in her practice begins with the frameworks people carry: the core beliefs about themselves, others, and the world that develop through lived experience. Much of the early work is about building awareness of those frameworks and beginning to understand how they shape day-to-day experience.

DBT she describes as a practice rather than a program. It draws on four areas of skill: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. For people who feel overwhelmed by intense emotions or who struggle to find the middle path between extremes, DBT offers a concrete and learnable set of tools.

Motivational Interviewing guides people in examining their own circumstances so that the desire to change comes from within. The insight has to belong to the person for it to hold.

Trauma informs everything. As a trauma-informed therapist in Charlotte, NC, Meredith works from the understanding that unresolved trauma affects the nervous system, physical health, and the way people relate to those around them.

Meredith spent years in Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient settings where coordinating care across providers and systems was central to the work. That systems-level orientation shapes how she thinks about what each person needs and what a realistic path forward looks like.

Who Meredith Works With

Meredith works with adolescents and adults, broadly ages 11 and up. She has particular experience with:

  • Women and adolescent girls
  • College students
  • People supporting a family member in active addiction or recovery
  • Survivors of domestic violence and trafficking
  • Parents and new mothers
  • People experiencing grief and loss
  • Individuals with severe and persistent mental health concerns
  • People working through difficult family relationships and life transitions

She works with the full range of what brings people into counseling and psychotherapy: depression, anxiety, relational stress, OCD, and the long-term effects of trauma.

Meredith’s Background

Meredith earned her Master of Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and her Bachelor of Science in Sociology from North Carolina State University. Her clinical path has taken her through some of the most demanding settings in the field.

She has worked in adolescent day programs with young people managing emotional and behavioral struggles, substance use, and involvement with the juvenile justice and foster care systems. She has worked as a crisis counselor and team lead in a hospital emergency department. There she completed crisis assessments and provided acute counseling, and she worked with medical teams to determine the right level of care for people arriving in some of the hardest moments of their lives. She has led groups in Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs, and has served in clinical director and executive director roles at an outpatient mental health organization.

What runs through all of that experience is a consistent investment in people who are often overlooked: people in crisis, and people caught up in systems that were not built with them in mind. Behaviors that look like problems often trace back to something that happened to the person. Meredith’s work starts from that understanding.

She holds unconditional positive regard as a core orientation and works from a belief in each person’s inherent capacity for change. The therapeutic relationship is the foundation of the work. That orientation took shape through years in settings where people arrived in acute distress and left with more than they came in with.
