Finding The Path Forward

Creating Safety, Connection, and Change: The Work of Moriah Yager

Moriah Yager believes that our mental and emotional patterns aren’t fixed; they can shift and evolve through individualized support and exploration. As an outpatient therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Work Associate (LCSWA), she specializes in individual and group therapy, helping people reconnect with a sense of safety and possibility. Her future plans include expanding access to mental health support through innovative approaches, including digital platforms and retreat-based services that meet people where they are.

From Communication to Connection

Moriah’s path to psychotherapy began with a degree in communication studies, where she developed a fascination with helping people process their unique experiences. Initially drawn to teaching, she gradually recognized that many communication challenges stem from a lack of emotional and psychological safety. When you don’t feel safe, whether internally or in your environment, it becomes difficult to communicate openly. This often traces back to past experiences that left you feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or disconnected.

She found herself asking: What makes certain thought patterns persist, even when they no longer serve us? Moriah describes this through a vivid image: “I think of a pond where algae gathers when water isn’t circulating. The water holds the potential for change. It just needs movement to find its natural flow again.” This insight led her to pursue psychotherapy, where she focuses on helping people discover and strengthen their own capacity to create change through meaningful connections, building on existing strengths, and self-exploration.

Shaped by Resilience and Recovery

Growing up in Cambodia, primarily in Phnom Penh with time in Koh Kong and Preah Vihear provinces near the Thai border, Moriah witnessed firsthand the long-term impacts of collective trauma following the Khmer Rouge genocide of the 1970s. She witnessed individuals and communities healing and rebuilding together. This experience gave her a profound understanding of how trauma affects both individuals and systems across generations. It deepened her respect for people’s capacity to heal when given supportive relationships and conditions that honor their own timing and process.

This background continues to inform her commitment to creating therapeutic spaces where clients can explore difficult experiences, grow in their own direction, and recognize the strengths they carry.

A Collaborative Approach

Intuitive, creative, curious, and collaborative, Moriah’s therapeutic approach is firmly person-centered. “I believe my client is the expert on themselves, and they have everything they need to be able to heal and grow,” she explains. “I see my role as collaborative and encouraging, supporting people in their process not choosing one for them.”

Moriah works to support clients in advocating for themselves, recognizing and claiming strengths they may not have fully valued, and building capacity in areas where they want to grow. She’s transparent about her approach and tailors her work to each person’s unique needs and goals, understanding that effective therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. What brings her the most satisfaction? Witnessing clients gain clarity, discover new perspectives, and experience the ripple effects of positive change in their lives.

Beyond the Therapy Room

When not at work, Moriah explores her creative interests in poetry, music, and art. She finds deep joy in experiencing what others create and values honest, curiosity-driven conversations. These creative practices remind her of the many ways people express and process their inner worlds, shaping how she listens and responds in therapy.
